HOW TO READ THIS REPORT

Action plan is what to do next — copy-pasteable changes prioritized by impact. Category visibility is the real GEO test: when a user asks an AI a brand-free question that should surface google-research/text-to-text-transfer-transformer, does the AI actually recommend you — or your competitors? Objective checks verify the metadata signals AI engines weight first. Self-mention check detects whether AI even knows you exist by name.

OVERALL DIRECTION
  • highreadme#1
Reposition README opening to clarify legacy status and primary purpose

    Why:

    CURRENT
    T5: Text-To-Text Transfer Transformer

    ### As of July 2022, we recommend using T5X:

T5X is the new and improved implementation of T5 (and more) in JAX and Flax.
T5 on Tensorflow with MeshTF is no longer actively developed. If you are new
to T5, we recommend starting with T5X.

The `t5` library serves primarily as code for reproducing the experiments in [_Exploring the Limits of Transfer Learning with a Unified Text-to-Text Transformer_][paper]. In the paper, we demonstrate how to achieve state-of-the-art results on multiple NLP tasks using a text-to-text transformer pre-trained on a large text corpus.

The bulk of the code in this repository is used for loading, preprocessing, mixing, and evaluating datasets.
It also provides a way to fine-tune the [pre-trained models](#released-model-checkpoints) released alongside the publication.

The `t5` library can be used for future model development by providing useful modules for training and fine-tuning (potentially *huge*) models on mixtures of text-to-text tasks.

T5: Text-To-Text Transfer Transformer (Legacy Repository for Research Reproduction)

**Important Note: This repository is no longer actively developed.** As of July 2022, we recommend using [T5X](https://github.com/google-research/t5x), the new and improved implementation of T5 (and more) in JAX and Flax. If you are new to T5, please start with T5X.

This `t5` library serves primarily as the original code for reproducing the experiments in [_Exploring the Limits of Transfer Learning with a Unified Text-to-Text Transformer_][paper]. It pioneered the approach of framing all NLP tasks as a unified text-to-text problem, using a single encoder-decoder architecture. This repository provides the historical implementation for loading, preprocessing, mixing, and evaluating datasets, and for fine-tuning the [pre-trained models](#released-model-checkpoints) released alongside the publication. While it contains useful modules, its primary purpose is for historical reference and reproducing the original paper's results.

  • mediumfaq#3
Add a FAQ section clarifying T5 vs. T5X usage

    Why:

    COPY-PASTE FIX
Add a new section, e.g., 'T5 vs. T5X: When to use this repository?' with content like: 'This `t5` repository is the original TensorFlow/MeshTF implementation, primarily for reproducing the results of the 'Exploring the Limits of Transfer Learning...' paper. For new projects, active development, or improved performance, we strongly recommend using [T5X](https://github.com/google-research/t5x), which is the JAX/Flax-based successor.'
